President Donald Trump congratulated the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) on its State election win in Saxony-Anhalt, eastern Germany. In the same post he said German voters had finally grown tired of immigration rules and regulations that had done the country great harm.
“Wow, the populist party in Germany had a really big night,” he wrote on his Truth Social platform, referring to Sunday’s election. Although the Republican did not mention the AfD by name, the reference in his post was clear enough. The AfD and its supporters are fed up with the “absolutely terrible immigration rules,” Trump said. “THEY ARE ON THE RISE, and they won’t put up with it anymore,” he continued.
Trump ended his post with “MGGA!!!,” which is likely an abbreviation for “Make Germany Great Again” — a play on his slogan “Make America Great Again.”
Since Trump took office in January 2025, the AfD has reportedly had better ties than ever before to Washington. Co-party leader Alice Weidel called Trump a role model following his return to the White House, and AfD representatives traveled to Washington for his inauguration. U.S. Vice President JD Vance met with Weidel as early as February 2025 on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference and warned during the conference against ignoring the will of millions of voters by marginalizing populist parties and erecting political “firewalls.” His remarks caused quite a stir at the time and were criticized by numerous German politicians.
