The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, has warned that the public will hold policymakers accountable for delivering on their promises before next year’s European elections.
She also stated that taking a firm stance against terrorism and making every effort to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza are not mutually exclusive goals.
“A Small Possibility” for Peace
In her opening speech, the Maltese President of the European Parliament said that there remained a small possibility that peace could still emerge in the Middle East. However, she insisted that as a Union, Europe has a responsibility to remain consistent and united.
“We must preserve even the slightest possibility that peace may ultimately be achieved.”
Metsola said that doing so does not mean tolerating more deaths and violence, but rather preventing a dangerous regional escalation of the conflict.
Parliament’s Position on Hamas
The European Parliament has condemned Hamas in the strongest possible terms, the MEP noted, stating plainly that Hamas must be stopped.
Metsola’s remarks come as EU institutions continue to navigate the balance between security concerns tied to terrorism and the humanitarian toll of the ongoing conflict, a balance that is likely to remain a central theme heading into next year’s European elections.
