On Tuesday, one of the European Parliament’s buildings will officially be renamed in honour of former European Parliament President David Sassoli.
The official ceremony will take place from 3:00 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. on the Esplanade Solidarność 1980, between the Zweig Building and the new Sassoli Building.
The inauguration will begin with a speech by Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, followed by addresses from other dignitaries and the unveiling of a commemorative plaque.
David Sassoli, an Italian journalist and politician, was elected President of the European Parliament on 3 July 2019, succeeding Antonio Tajani. He held the position until his death at the age of 65 on 11 January 2022. In one of his speeches, he said: “The European Union is not an accident of history (…). We are not an accident of history, but the children and grandchildren of those who managed to find the antidote to the nationalist degeneration that poisoned our history.”
To honour the memory of David Sassoli, the Parliament’s Bureau, composed of the President, Vice-Presidents and Quaestors, decided on 9 February 2026 to rename the Treves Building after the former President.
