Spain’s interior ministry has extended border checks on travellers arriving from Italy by another 15 days, amid a diplomatic dispute between Madrid and Rome.
The measures will remain in place until Sept. 22 and apply to travellers arriving from Italy by air or sea.
The diplomatic dispute between Madrid and Rome began in late July, when the Italian government unilaterally announced the suspension of the Schengen agreement with Spain, citing a surge in migrants arriving in Ceuta.
Italy has repeatedly said since then, including at each subsequent extension of the checks, that the migration situation in Ceuta remains unresolved, warranting the continuation of the controls.
Spain first introduced the checks on Aug. 8, in response to Italy’s suspension several days earlier of free movement for travellers arriving from Italian territory.
