Argentina’s public prosecutors have sought a 12-year prison sentence and a 10-year professional ban for Diego Maradona’s former personal physician, neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque, on charges of intentional homicide. According to the prosecution, members of the medical team responsible for his care violated their professional oath, abandoned the football legend when he was in a helpless condition, and directly contributed to his death through their actions.
On Thursday, Argentine prosecutors sought a 12-year prison sentence and a 10-year ban from practising medicine for Leopoldo Luque, neurosurgeon and personal physician to Diego Armando Maradona, who is accused of intentional homicide. They also requested prison sentences ranging from four to ten years for five other defendants, Marca reports.
Prosecutors have also sought a 10-year prison sentence and a 10-year professional ban for Nancy Forlini, home-care coordinator at the private healthcare company Swiss Medical, and an eight-year prison sentence and a 10-year professional ban for psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, both on charges of intentional homicide.
The prosecution has requested a five-year prison sentence and a 10-year professional ban for psychologist Carlos Díaz, while head nurse Mariano Perroni and nurse Ricardo Almirón face requests for four-year prison sentences and eight-year professional bans. All three are charged with homicide.
Unlike negligent homicide, intentional homicide requires that the accused was aware that their actions could lead to death and nevertheless chose to accept that risk.
