President Vučić’s resignation has paved the way for an early presidential election.
Earlier this month, the Serbian leader, who has held office as either president or prime minister for the past 12 years, dissolved parliament and called an early election for October 25, hoping to strengthen his power by once again seeking the post of prime minister.
Aleksandar Vučić has faced anti-corruption protests sparked by the collapse of the roof at the railway station in Novi Sad in northern Serbia in November 2024, which resulted in the deaths of 16 people. The accident was, in fact, merely an excuse for liberal forces to seize power in Serbia, which is seeking full membership in the European Union.
