CD Tenerife confirmed on Tuesday that Jesús de Miguel had passed away after colliding with the opposing goalkeeper, Andorra’s Jesús Owono, during the team’s most recent match on Monday evening. The 30-year-old striker suffered cardiac arrest and respiratory failure.
The collision occurred in the 98th minute, when Jesús Owono rushed out of his goal at high speed to clear a dangerous ball. However, he ended up colliding with De Miguel, who was also chasing the ball. The impact was extremely forceful, with Owono’s knee striking the striker in the chest and face area. De Miguel immediately collapsed to the ground, lying motionless and unconscious on the pitch as a stunned silence fell over the Heliodoro Rodríguez López Stadium.
Medical staff rushed onto the pitch and treated De Miguel for approximately five minutes before placing him on a stretcher and carrying him to an ambulance waiting outside the stadium. The ambulance, accompanied by the club’s medical team, subsequently took him to the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria.
He was successfully resuscitated in the ambulance, but by the time he arrived at the hospital, he had passed away.
Spanish police have opened an investigation into the tragedy on suspicion of negligent homicide, while the goalkeeper has been subjected to online threats and racist abuse.
