“It seems realistic that Armenia will officially submit its application to join the EU in 2027 or 2028,” Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said at Euronews’ EU Enlargement Summit. He added that his government plans to seek public opinion on the matter, allowing Armenians to choose their own path.
“Our primary intention is to create an alternative for the Armenian people and the Republic of Armenia, because traditionally, our society — and perhaps our neighbourhood as well — has viewed Armenia as having no alternative to maintaining close ties with Russia,” Pashinyan said. According to the prime minister, his government aims to diversify the country’s political and economic relations.
Russia has threatened retaliatory measures, primarily by cutting off Armenia’s energy supplies.
Yerevan has not yet submitted a formal application. It is currently engaged in visa liberalisation talks with the European Commission, with the aim of completing the process by 2029.
