The European Union Military Committee (EUMC) has gathered in Ireland for a series of focused working sessions, hosted under the Irish Presidency of the Council of the EU. Building on ongoing efforts in Brussels, these meetings provide a critical forum for EU Member States to examine pressing military priorities, share national perspectives, and address shared security challenges.
The discussions aimed to deepen collective understanding of key defence issues, ensuring the EUMC delivers coherent and timely military advice to support EU decision-making. Topics under review include crisis management, capability development, and strategic partnerships, reinforcing the EU’s commitment to a secure and resilient Europe.
The European Union Military Committee is the highest military body within the Council of the European Union. It directs all military activities within the EU framework, for example the planning and execution of military missions and operations under the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP).
It also directs the development of military capabilities, gives military advice to the Political and Security Committee (PSC) and makes recommendations on military matters.
The EUMC is composed of the chiefs of defence of the member states, who are regularly represented by their permanent military representatives. The committee has a permanent chair, selected by the chiefs of defence and appointed by the Council.
