Belgium is fighting the blaze that broke out Friday in the High Fens park near the German border and quickly spread, Federal police describes it as the largest in Belgium’s modern history.
The blaze broke out in an area of fragile peatlands and pine forests that was ravaged by massive wildfires in 1911, during a similar period of extreme heatwaves and drought.
In Belgium, currently the continent’s most urgent fire front, around 500 firefighters and emergency crews have mobilised to contain the blaze.
Crucial support swung into action to help firefighters from the air. Reinforcements were pulled from across the country to fight with helicopters and water bombers flying in from across the EU to help.
Much-needed rain brought some respite to firefighters on their fourth day battling Belgium’s worst wildfire in a century, which has scorched vast expanses of nature reserve on the German border.
