Sweden’s Social Democrats are ready to attempt to form a government after their opposition alliance narrowly defeated the right-wing bloc in the election.
Magdalena Andersson, who previously served as Sweden’s prime minister from 2021 to 2022, is expected to try to form a government with the alliance’s three other parties — the Left Party, the Green Party and the Centre Party. The four parties currently hold a majority of just three seats in Sweden’s 349-seat parliament.
Coalition talks are expected to be difficult, with significant differences remaining among the four parties. The Left Party in particular has indicated that it would support the government only if it were given ministerial posts, a demand that the Centre Party strongly opposes.
In a video message posted on her social media accounts, Andersson said: “The Swedish people voted for Sweden to move forward, and I want to deliver the new direction you have chosen. It is the responsibility of all political forces to put aside party political tactics and put the interests of Sweden and the Swedish people first.”
