The European Commission has approved a further €6.1 billion military aid for Ukraine on the 35th anniversary of the country’s independence. The aid is part of the EU’s €90 billion support loan for Ukraine for the years 2026 and 2027.
According to Ursula von der Leyen, president of the Commission the funding is intended to cover “air and missile defence systems, missiles, ammunitions and radars.” The money will be disbursed after Kiev submits contracts signed with defence companies.
Meanwhile European leaders have gathered in Kiev to celebrate Ukraine’s Independence Day which commemorates the declaration of independence from the Soviet Union, adopted on August 24, 1991. European Council President António Costa, Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Luc Frieden, Moldovan President Maia Sandu and Estonian President Alar Karis with their presence are representing the European Union in Kiev. The Coalition of the Willing, a group of countries supporting Ukraine against Russia, assured the Ukrainian government of its full support on this notable occasion.
